Wendell T. Robie Trail

DESCRIPTION:

No bikes.

From the Sliger Mine Road, the trail switchbacks rapidly up and around Summit Hill. Here it connects an old ditch from Canyon Creek and then levels out as it follows the ditch line. Nice rock work for the construction of the old ditch can be seen along the trail. Views of the Middle Fork canyon are worthwhile, as is the chance to lose the crowds that don’t venture this far from Auburn.

Heading east and then north, continue by the Spanish Dry Diggins cemetery another 0.3 mile and turn right (north) at Fox Grove Lane junction (shown but not labeled on map). Sliger Mine Road continues rapidly down hill once pavement ends, and low clearance vehicles should park before that. Beyond here high-clearance vehicles recommended. Continue down the Sliger Mine Road 1.3 miles after pavement ends. Trailhead is located where Western States Trail leaves the Sliger Mine Road to the left (west). Large sign for Western States Trail on the left; however, look for small trail sign for the Wendell T. Robie Trail on the right. It is accessed via Wentworth Springs Road (Forest Service #1) east out of Georgetown. Turn left onto Bottle Hill Bypass Road and follow to the campground. To reach the Wendell T. Robie Trail from the Campground follow Bottle Hill Road to the Bottle Hill townsite. Continue west on the Cement Hill Road until you drop into Canyon Creek and connect with the east end of the Wendell T. Robie Trail. Total road distance from the campground is roughly 10 miles to the trail.

ACTIVITIES:

Equestrian Trail Riding (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Moderate Time: 1 hour

The trail is named for the stalwart champion of the Tevis Cup Ride on the WST. Riders can connect to the Dru Barner Equestrian Campground via old roads that head east from the trail ending. Dru was the first female champion of the race. Although the trail is short, the connecting trails make this part of a great ride.

Hiking - Dayhikes (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Moderate Time: 1½ hours down, 3 hours up

The hike is great, getting there is the limitation.
