This segment of the WST (Western States Trail) is best left for adventure enthusiasts or Western States Trail endurance participants. As they drop deeper and deeper into the canyon, racers never forget the "oven" effect by the mid-afternoon sun on the south slopes. Many runners hit nightfall here and continue their runs using flashlights.
No bikes.

Topographic maps: Foresthill, Georgetown, Greenwood.
Directions from the top (east end of this trail segment): The trail continues through downtown Foresthill. To catch the trail as it leaves town and heads down into the Middle Fork, use California Street heading south. There is no trailhead parking available at the end of California Street and Mosquito Road crossing. Overnight parking not encouraged. Daytime parking in downtown Foresthill is the best option and considered okay. Camping along the trail must be approved by Auburn State Recreation Area permit and can be allowed only in specific areas.
Directions from the Middle Fork American River (west end of this trail segment): Start at Ruck-a-Chucky Campground. The trail follows an old mining road up river providing great access for about 4.5 miles to Fords Bar. Shortly afterward the trail starts its climb to Foresthill.
See Nearby Locations for listing of other nearby segments of the WST. Another great ride, but avoid it mid-days in the summertime where the canyon takes on an "oven effect."
Interesting, but hot, hot in summer. Best to have a shuttle or walk all the way from Forestill to a good road or even Auburn. Now you're talking a backpacking trip.
