Stevens Trail

DESCRIPTION:

No horses. One of the most popular hiking/biking access trails to the river -- in part because of easy access from Colfax that offers great places to eat or have a cool one after climbing out. The trail during the Gold Rush served as a toll trail and was the best route to Iowa Hill. Most of the trail gradient is good, with some steeper sections. Judging from the wide range of ages of the hikers you’ll encounter, the hills don’t slow many of them down or dissuade them from this popular trail. The trail is fun; the destination is strictly for the exercise. It’s a long hike to take to the river for a summer swim. Still, it’s popular. You can’t miss Stevens Falls in the springtime; the trail cuts over the middle of it. The falls are more cascade than falls, and are best seen after a short scramble off the trail.
