Smith Lake -- Jamison Creek Trail

DESCRIPTION:

Most people use this trail to access Smith Lake from either end (shortest from the east and the Gray Eagle Lodge area) and seldom go all the way through to the other trail end. If you want to go all the way on the connecting throughway, you could arrange transportation at the other end, and make a day of fully enjoying yourself by exploring the historic structures in Plumas-Eureka State Park. Smith Lake is a clear, green lake at 6079'.

Fishing for Brook trout (stocked 2000).

Hint: Gray Eagle Lodge offers nice amenities when you end your trek.

Miles Elevation Range Options
1 5720’-6079 (lake)-6340’-5280’

It is 1.0 mile to Smith Lake, and a total of 2.5 miles all the way through to Jamison Creek Trail -- moderate, elevations. You have the option of coming from the east at the Gray Eagle Trailhead or from the west at the Jamison Mine Trailhead.

The Mount Elwell Trail connects to the Smith Lake Trail just east of the lake. On a good day you could bag the lake then zip up to the top of Mount Elwell, drop down to the Long Lake Trail and follow it back to the Gray Eagle Trailhead. You'll still be back in time for cocktails at the Lodge. Ah, wilderness.

But pace yourself. That last 1/4 mile from the Lodge to the trailhead and parking area could be the longest and most challenging segment.

Riders prefer to connect through to Mount Elwell or Long Lake Trails for longer rides. Lots of combinations are available. You can also use this link to connect to the Jamison Creek Trail and head into that basin with its 4 lakes, where primitive overnight camping is permitted. Using this link means a little less driving (unless you come in from the north), more riding, and you can notch another lake into your memories.
