Powderhorn Trail to Diamond Crossing


   

DESCRIPTION:

No bikes or motorized vehicles. This is a lightly used access into the Wilderness, which in itself is an attraction. It drops down through volcanic rock formations and the vistas into Five Lakes Creek Valley are peacefully rewarding. There are good Wilderness campsites near Diamond Crossing, The best fishing within Granite Chief Wilderness lies downstream in Five Lakes Creek from there.

DIRECTIONS:

To Powderhorn Trail to Diamond Crossing

Topographic map: Wentworth Springs. Continue on Forest Service #03 Road west beyond Barkers Pass. Don’t turn left (south) on heavily used Road #03-4 to Barker Meadows. Instead, continue right (west) 2.2 miles west of Barker Pass to the trailhead. The trail follows and crosses several logging roads before entering Wilderness after 0.75 mile.


ACTIVITIES:

Equestrian Trail Riding (Rating: Best)

Difficulty: Moderate

This is a nice way to slip into the Granite Chief Wilderness, which then links to several trails within the Wilderness that can make either short trips or long treks.


Good Wilderness equestrian camping available at Diamond Crossing.

Hiking: Dayhikes (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Difficult Time: 1½ hours down, 3 hours up
