Pole Creek Area: miles your choice, all double track dirt roads with very little traffic. More difficult for length and uphill sections.
Be sure to stop to read the interpretive signs describing management of Lahontan Trout in this important drainage. At the sign for Upper Pole Creek turn left and continue up this rougher road.
Stop to check out the Sierra Club’s newest cross-country ski hut, the Bradley Hut (see Donner Summit). From here the beautiful meadows and dominant Sierra Crest will lure you farther.
Bring a good map and you can climb south to the top of Silver Peak in a one-hour hustle. Or loop north continuing up Road #08, then veer right (north) down the ridge all the way to Granite Flat Campground on Highway 89. From there it’s a left down Highway 89 to the comfort and hospitality of Truckee. Or if your vehicle is parked at the bottom of the Pole Creek Road, you might want to turn right and go back via Highway 89. The highway has painted bikeways for each direction. All options are for experienced riders.
