To second trailhead along the Pioneer Trail at White Cloud Campground: From Nevada City, follow Highway 20 for 11 miles east. The trail crosses Highway 20 about ¼ mile west of White Cloud. Some users park on the road into the Tahoe National Forest fire station, and continue west through the campground then following the old logging road that continues west until it crosses Pioneer Trail.
From the Lone Grave and Washington Overlook areas the ride is popular and relatively easy. But, use is heavy by not only bikers but other equestrian riders and occasional hikers. Be alert.
Single track. This second segment in the Pioneer Trail foursome is a notch above the first segment in technical difficulty and grades. Again you can return or continue. You also can loop into 24 miles of trails in Burlington Ridge Complex, either from Washington Overlook or Chalk Bluff Road trailheads. Rides can be easy or difficult, and lots of combinations are available. Also popular with motorbikes and equestrians so watch for other users.
And you are still close enough to return to Nevada City for a cool one.

Use this trail for the all-out exercise options not a chance to enjoy a quiet commune with Ma Nature. Yet, so close to Nevada City and Grass Valley summer evening strolls or early morning jaunts are feasible. Joggers enjoy it too, especially the lower segment. Pristine, it ain’t but still pleasant and handy.
