PCT-11 Wild Plum Cmpg. to Packer Saddle Trailhead

DESCRIPTION:

Again the trail is listed in the traditional hike from south to north. But don't do it. For this segment as a dayhike travel north from Packer Saddle to Wild Plum as then it's almost all downhill. And a big downhill too. Over 30 switchbacks.

The south face of Sierra Buttes’ unique plant community isn’t found on other local trails to the same extent as it is on this hike anywhere else in our neighborhood. The rapid ascent from alpine to canyon ecosystems is a down-hill thrill -- as long as you arrange transportation at the bottom at Hwy 49 crossing just above Love’s Falls, or Wild Plum Campground near Sierra City, or just keep heading south. Challenging choices for long distance treks: Jackson Meadows Reservoir, I-80 Pacific Crest Trail Trailhead at Donner Summit, Hwy 50 at Echo Lake, or Mexico? If you want to backtrack and return to Packer Saddle, turn around before, or at least at, the dominant, easterly ridge and before starting down the switchbacks. Avoid climbing back up the 30+ switchbacks, unless you’re into punishment. Take time to enjoy the views of the North Yuba Canyon and Sierra City rooftops lying comfortably below. You can practically smell cooking aromas beckoning from several restaurants.
