PCT-10 Hwy 49 - Loves Fall or Wild Plum Campground

DESCRIPTION:

No bikes.

This is the easiest, shortest, quickest way to do Loves Falls. After the brief stroll to Loves Falls the trek south on the PCT offers inspiring vistas of the Sierra Buttes. You can return at any point or enjoy the options listed below. At the falls the North Yuba River tumbles with gusto down this chaotic, rocky gorge until it eventually passes below your feet under the impressive and photogenic footbridge. For the best photopoint, drop down the short stub trail below the bridge.

First option: For a more challenging and satisfying trek to the falls use the Wild Plum Loop Trail to the PCT then continue north to Loves Falls. You can leave one vehicle at Hwy 49 and end here or return back down (south) to the PCT and finish the loop by following the Wild Plum trail down to the campground again.

Another option: From Hwy 49 following the PCT south to the Haypress Trail offers an approach we consider the most scenic access to that trail.

Still another option: Follow the PCT south to the Milton Creek Trail which is frequently accessed from the Wild Plum Campground.

Or what could be your final option if you’re not in excellent shape: After refreshing yourself in the cooling mists of Loves Falls, you’ll be inspired to head north up the PCT, cross Hwy 49, and tackle the 30+ switchbacks up, up, and up still more to the southern flanks of Sierra Buttes. But unless you have lots of time or are heading to Canada, resist the temptation and instead take the trail down from Packer Saddle, (PCT South to Wild Plum from the Packer Saddle Trailhead. See Lakes Basin). That trip is awesome and easily done with a partner and second vehicle. Or at least stay an overnight and rest up at the Plum Creek Campground. Or better yet, skip the heavy backpack and stay at one of the B&Bs in Sierra City. In fact, during summers you can hop the shuttle to Packer Saddle Trailhead and won’t need a second vehicle. Life is full of options if you get out and enjoy them.
