PCT-07 I-80 Donner Summit to Meadow Lake Road #86

DESCRIPTION:

Bikes not allowed on Pacific Crest Trail.

This is a great trek over a high standard trail with moderate grades, see-sawing over the headwaters of several drainages just below the Pacific Crest. Although it can be crowded near I-80, the number of users quickly thins out north of Peter Grubb Hut. Shuttle opportunity on the other end can be reached via Meadow Lake Road #86 (E). It is a long, rather slow drive, so most people just hike in as far as they like, then double back the way they came. Except for the Pacific Crest Trail trekkers who are on their way to Canada -- for them this is just a pleasant stroll for a day or less. See Pacific Crest Trail to White Rock Lake as a nice destination for an overnight stay before returning to Donner Pass.

The trailhead has room for nine horse trailers and water is available. The PCT is an excellent riding opportunity and this trailhead gives access to one of the nicest segments in this area. Heading north is the better option but the trail to the south is available also.

Camping at Whiterock lake and then returning would make a nice two short days outing, but it can also readily be done in one day on horseback.
