Lawyer Bar Trail

Distance 1.3 miles one-way; Difficulty Challenging; Elevations: 4,320’-3060’

This is the Rubicon at its wildest and best

If you accidentally forget your swimming trucks...

DESCRIPTION:

The trail begins dropping moderately at a nicely designed segment of trail. As it finally drops into the Rubicon River the trail steepens and can be slippery on wet days. Your destination that you’ll pay for as you climb out is a beautiful gorge with a large fishing and swimming hole. This is the Rubicon at its wildest and best.

The location is a favored, isolated swimming spot by the locals, but watch for rattlesnakes. Take a fishing pole or even camping gear and make a stay-over out of the trek. If you accidentally forget your swimming trucks, don’t sweat it as long as you have the place to yourself.

DIRECTIONS:

To Lawyer Bar Trail

From Wentworth Springs Road, twenty-two miles east of Georgetown, turn north on Eleven Pines Road. Continue approximately one and one-half miles to the trailhead on the left.

ACTIVITIES:

Fishing (Rating: Good)

The Rubicon has many mid-sized Rainbows and just enough appetizingly big Browns to make fishing, and catching, worthwhile. The river is noted more for its scenery and joy of fishing than in the success rate of catching. Make sure you carry a light-weight, sectional rod that preferably fits into your pack.

The Rubicon is a designated wild trout river from Hell Hole Dam to the confluence with the American River. Most of the fishing occurs near Ellicotts Bridge and along the trail upstream to Parsley Bar so fishing pressure here is light to very light. There are no special regulations on the water. The river falls within the Department's Sierra District, so the fishing season is only open from the last Saturday in April through November 15.

Hiking - Dayhikes (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Challenging Time: 1 hour down 1.5 - 2 hours back up

Hiking - Backpacking (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Challenging Time: 1 hour down 1.5 - 2 hours back up

Make the best out of the need to return back up a 1260’ climb and enjoy the outback feeling of the rugged Rubicon River canyon. This section of the river is truly wild. Take a fishing pole but if the heavy, heavy weight of swimming suits is too much, look for alternatives. All sights are totally undeveloped. Bring water or a good water purifier. Or if you prefer, boil drinking and dish water for at least 5 minutes.
