DESCRIPTION:

This is an old miner’s trail to Volcanoville. From the south, it drops for about a mile steeply down to Otter Creek canyon. Near the creek crossing, there once was a Chinese camp and garden. From the bottom it continues north up to the Paymaster Mine Road.

Neither mountain bike or equestrian trail riding are recommended due to the steep drop of 980’ to Otter Creek or a 1320’ climb continuing north.

If you enjoy a strenuous workout, or want to visit the creek and the historic Gold Rush site, it’s a worthwhile trip down from the south side near Little Bald Mountain. At the creek you've hiked the best part of the trail. A good option is to return south up the way you came and return to the car for another destination, another day.

Otter Creek offers fairly good, small-stream fishing but the creek sides are forested and brushy; so go in the summer and plan on wading the creek.

But the trail is low on my list of priorities.

DIRECTIONS:

To Kelliher Trail

From Wentworth Springs Road, 3 miles east of Georgetown, turn north on Breedlove Road. Continue 2 miles to Bottle Hill Road and turn left. Continue approximately 1 ½ miles to the trailhead on the right.

ACTIVITIES:

Hiking: Dayhikes (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Challenging Time: Return back up to the parking area makes the hike a nicer-half day.

Fair, actually. See description.

Equestrian Trail Riding (Rating: Poor)

Difficulty: Difficult Time: The loop is an optional, longer ride.

Very steep with standard, remote country setting. Short trek.

A loop of a little over 6 miles trail ride using the Kelliher, Otter Creek Trails and the connecting primitive roads at least makes a ride out of it but the trails dropping into the canyon are steep. But you're close to the Dru Bonner Equestrian Campgound.

Mountain Biking (Rating: Poor)

Difficulty: Challenging

Very steep with standard, remote country setting.
