2.5 miles to Lakes, 3 miles to Pacific Crest Trail, 4 miles to Whiskey Camp; elevations: 7540' (Five Lakes Basin), 6940' (Whiskey Cabin) . No bikes or motorized vehicles.
The trail climbs through interesting granite rock formations, but crossing the south slope with few trees on the initial climb can be hot. Five Lakes basin is not an area for solitude; it’s heavily used. Yet, the lakes have a serenity that helps you forget you’re flanked on the north and south by major ski areas.
There are measures in place to restore lakeshore ecosystems impacted by heavy camping use in the recent past: no camping within 600' of lakes with "leave no trace" camping encouraged.
The largest lake is the only one managed for light fishing. It has not been restocked in several years, but Brookies are regenerating on their own.
