Emigrant Trail at Big Bend

DESCRIPTION:

Of the 2000 plus miles of the historic California Emigrant Trail, this is one of the best-preserved segments and it provides an intriguing glimpse into the challenges the pioneers faced. Trees scarred by wagon hubs, trees (now 3 dead snags) still carrying scars over 150 years old from ropes used to winch wagons down a steep granite slab, rust marks and grooves left in granite boulders and bedrock, all hint of the difficult trail. Stop at the Tahoe National Forest Visitor Center first (530-426-3609). The Museum contains interpretive materials for this vital transportation corridor. During summers, Tahoe National Forest guided tours are available. The nearby Rainbow Lodge is one of the most fun restaurants anywhere. In 2003 it was selected as Nevada County’s "Most Romantic Getaway."
