DESCRIPTION:

ATVs are not permitted. There are no 4WD opportunities or designated routes.

Trails evolved by using old roads and skid trails. Several loop options are available by connecting trails. Colored markers along each trail were designed to assist in following any trail correctly.In 2002, many of the colored markings were already missing.


Hallelujah (red): 2.3 miles, difficult
Towle Mill Loop (blue): 9.4 miles, moderate
Omega (orange): 4.4 miles, difficult
Stanton (purple): 2.2 miles, moderate
Big Tunnel (black): 0.7 miles, difficult.

Trails are open to and shared by equestrians and others. Motorcycle users favor Chalk Bluff Road Trailhead on the eastern end of the complex, and equestrians tend to prefer the Washington Overlook Trailhead on the western end of the complex. Cyclist should yield to equestrian riders and their horses.

To Burlington Ridge Complex

To the best trailhead for equestrians: Travel 12.5 miles eastof Nevada City on Highway 49; turn right (southwest) at sign onto road #20-9 to the Washington Overlook Trailhead; follow gravel road over 0.5 mile to a large, dirt parking area permitting parking of trailers as well as room to turn around. Next to Highway 20 is a gate that is locked November 1-May 15. At the gate two or three small vehicles could park for mountain biking or hiking in the off-season.

All users are permitted to use this trailhead, but there is no loading ramp designed for motorcycles.

To the best trailhead for motorcycles:Travel 16 miles east on Highway 20 , turn right (southwest) on Chalk Bluff Road FS #32 (not signed in 2002). Follow 0.8 mile to parking area on stub road to left. Parking area provides a dock built by volunteer motorcycling enthusiasts for unloading vehicles and sufficient area to turn trailers unless the parking area is crowded already.


ACTIVITIES:

OHV - 4-Wheel Drives (Rating: Best)

Motorcycles only. The area is not open to ATVs or 4WD vehicles.

Trails range from easy to moderately difficult.

Season April through mid-November.

OHV - Motorcycles (Rating: Best)

Designed by motorcyclists for motorcyclists.

Equestrian Trail Riding (Rating: Good)

The trails are enjoyed by trail riders but are shared with motorcycles. Equestrian riders prefer the eastern end of the complex and use the trailhead near the Washington Overlook on Highway 20.

Hiking - Dayhikes (Rating: Good)

The best attraction is the nearly year-round access and the quick availability from Nevada City and Grass Valley. The trails were developed in a cooperative effort including motorcyclists and equestrian riders. The setting is a forested landscape that has been logged.
