Sierraville lies on the southern limits of Sierra Valley, a large, gentle, open basin that is the largest alpine valley in the continental U.S. Resting comfortably on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada, the basin lies east over Yuba Pass from the rich goldfields of the North Yuba River.
Today the peaceful area has maintained its rural qualities and charms that make it a wonderful contrast to the rugged crest and steep canyons on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada.
Jackson Meadows Reservoir lies east on the Henness Pass Road and is one of the top fishing and camping lakes in the Northern Sierra Nevada.
Sierra Valley was the ideal location for settlers who raised cattle and provided hay and dairy products for the booming population of miners.
Today the peaceful area has maintained its rural qualities and charms that make it a wonderful contrast to the rugged crest and steep canyons on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Expansive hay fields stretch out in the warm sun to the rich green pine forests that rim all but the Nevada side of the valley. Over 70 rustic barns, many dating back to original settlers in the 1870s, are dotted throughout the valley. All are on private land but several offer excellent photographic opportunities from public roads.
The rural highways and several county roads offer paved bike routes around and through the valley. The Sardine Peak Lookout area cresting the small range southeast of Sierraville provides numerous mountain biking opportunities on logging roads but the crowds have yet to discover the great selection. The Lookout is the perfect, tranquil site to view the valley and hills.
The Kyburz Interpretive Area offers a short driving tour allowing a fun and interesting opportunity for parents and kids to enjoy short walks that interpret three separate periods in the area’s history. The Kyburz Petroglyph dates back approximately 2000 years, More’s Station was a stage stop in the 1860s, and Wheeler Sheep Camp was a Basque base of operations from 1913 through 1958.
Jackson Meadows Reservoir lies east on the Henness Pass Road and is one of the top fishing and camping lakes in the Northern Sierra Nevada. Little Truckee River Falls (also referred to as Webber Falls) lies only 3 minutes off the road and is one of the best waterfalls of the Eastern Sierra. It lies on Sierra Pacific Industry lands and access is provided courtesy of them.
