Sattley

Today Sattley is noted more as a landmark at the junction of Sierra County Road A23 to Cal Pine and Beckwourth on Highway 70 than as a destination.

Sattley sits on the western and upper edge of the beautiful Sierra Valley.

DESCRIPTION:

Just west of Sattley on Highway 89 is the junction with Highway 49 that tops over Yuba Pass and drops into the North Yuba River basin. Sattley sits on the western and upper edge of the beautiful Sierra Valley.

There is the Cash Store and Post Office in the one building, but no other services – unless you count the bookshelf that is tucked behind the Post Office door and is full of used pocketbooks looking to be swapped to a new home. Each of the businesses has retained a museum-like, down-home rustic character linking to an earlier era and is worth a visit.

Sierra Valley is a favorite of road bike enthusiasts, and mountain bikers are discovering the fun, primitive roads through the Carman Valley and pine-covered ridges to the north.

Five miles north on Highway 89 just past Calpine is the Calpine Lookout that the Sierraville Ranger District has made available for overnight rentals beginning in October 2004. The little mountain has a grand view and cross-country skiing and mountain biking opportunities drop down the hill and spill over into Carman Valley.
