Pine Grove was a stage stop along the route that has become Highway 88. This Scenic Byway from Jackson to Carson Pass and Hope Valley along the East Slope of the Sierra Nevada is considered one of the most scenic drives across the mountain range.
The town sits in a favored location as the highway has entered a cooler elevation zone and pine forest.
The Indian Grinding Rock State Historical Park is just 1 ½ miles northeast of town along the road to Volcano. The Park rents seven U’mach’tam’ma’, authentic Miwok Indian bark houses, for overnight accommodations.
Pine Grove continues to provide necessities and niceties to travelers. There are motels and cafes as well as a classic and classy Italian restaurant. The town sits in a favored location as the highway has entered a cooler elevation zone and pine forest.
The Indian Grinding Rock State Historical Park is just 1 ½ miles northeast of town along the road to Volcano. The Park rents seven U’mach’tam’ma’, authentic Miwok Indian bark houses, for overnight accommodations. We’re talking primitive; so don’t bring your electric hairdryer. Guests need to haul water and their personal supplies for about 200 yards from the parking area.
Volcano is about 3 miles from town. This charming mining town has several historic buildings as well as one of the classiest hotels in the Sierra Nevada. Live theatre productions are offered each summer.
You can also rent rustic miner’s cabins south of town along the Mokelumne River and pan for gold along that stretch of river.
In addition to fishing the Mokelumne River, Lake Tabeau lies on the ridge above the river. The small lake offers good fishing for Rainbow and Brown Trout.
The high country above Pine Grove can be reached quickly via Highway 88. Lower Bear Reservoir, Silver Lake, and Caples Lake are each easily accessed from the highway. Carson Pass is famous for its hiking trails and hundreds of miles of OHV routes lie short distances from the highway. Gold Note and Elkins OHV management areas are dedicated to off-highway motorized recreation vehicles.
