North San Juan

Little remains of this Gold Rush town that once boasted a population of about 10,000. Now it’s a quiet community closer to 100. Quiet, that is, except during weekend nights when out-of-towners as well as locals gather in the one town watering hole.

Highway 49 is the town's one business street and the brick structures and iron shutters catch your eye even at 35 miles per hour.

Age has certainly added photogenic character to the bar as well as the cafe across the street. Both are worth the stop for a beer, Japanese entrees, or the tasty ice cream.

DESCRIPTION:

"Downtown" is a cluster of a few historic brick structures that have outlasted the closure of the hydraulic mining activities and the all too frequent fires early in its growth. Highway 49 is the town's one business street and the brick structures and iron shutters catch your eye even at 35 miles per hour.

The little town has several reasons to lure you to a refreshing stop. Age has certainly added photogenic character to the bar as well as the cafe across the street. Both are worth the stop for a beer, Japanese entrees, or the tasty ice cream.

The modern grocery store and gas station are the last chance to fill the car or kids before continuing farther. It is the last community before dropping into the Middle Yuba River canyon, which offers a historic covered, wooden bridge, swimming and picnicking, plus whitewater boating in the spring. New Bullards Bar Reservoir is a short drive farther north.
