Goodyear's Bar

Another sleepy little rural community, Goodyears Bar began as a roaring Gold Rush town. Goodyear’s Creek, which sliced its way rapidly down out of the ore rich mountains that surrounded the little community dumped tremendous riches into the Yuba.

The Post Office was established in October 1851 and the current Post Office built in the 1950’s in the spirit of the Gold Rush setting is one of the quaintest buildings in the Postal Service system.

Fishing is good and the North Yuba Trail that currently ends in Goodyears Bar is one of the outstanding trails in the area.

DESCRIPTION:

The rich placer gravels attracted miners at a level that rivaled Downieville in its early history.

A B&B occupies the hotel site that was built in 1864. Today it is operated as the Helm’s St Charles Inn. The Post Office was established in October 1851 and the current Post Office built in the 1950’s in the spirit of the Gold Rush setting is one of the quaintest buildings in the Postal Service system. The small, brown wood building is only one step above its log cabin roots and only a few steps from the fresh water gurgling down Goodyears Creek from the shoulders of Saddleback Mountain.

Today Goodyears Bar serves as a key access landing for whitewater enthusiasts. Fishing is good and the North Yuba Trail that currently ends in Goodyears Bar is one of the outstanding trails in the area. The trail is being extended to Downieville. This is a trail not to be missed.

The gravel Mountain House Road climbs south from the North Yuba River to the Pliocene Ridge and offers good access and a nice backcountry drive to historic Forest City and Alleghany.

DIRECTIONS:

To Goodyear's Bar

From Nevada City travel about 37 miles north and east on Highway 49. You’ll see no buildings along the highway, but the access roads are well signed. The highway and river split the tiny community. The Post Office is to the left (north) and the B&B to the right on the other side of the North Yuba River.
